Budgets

Limits per category and period, sub-categories, currencies and timezones.

• One limit for one expense category per period (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly). A category can have one of each, for example $20 a day and $150 a month for Food. Optional start and end dates.
• Sub-categories count toward their parent: a Food budget includes Groceries.
• Amounts are in the book’s currency; other currencies convert at the rate on each transaction’s date, as on the dashboard. Changing the book’s currency converts the budget amounts at today’s rate, and is refused if no rate is known.
• Periods follow the book’s timezone (books.timezone), so every member sees the same “today”. It’s UTC unless the app sends one; the app sends the creator’s timezone when creating a book. Weeks start on Monday.
• budget_progress gives each budget’s current period, limit, spent, remaining and percent used. Budgets on archived categories don’t show.
