Install
Run MSaving on a home machine or a VPS: clone the repository and start it.
What you need
A machine that stays on (a home computer, a mini PC, a Raspberry Pi 4 or newer, or a VPS) with Docker, Docker Compose and git. 1 GB of memory is enough to run it; building it is the heaviest step, so on a 1 GB machine add some swap if the build fails. amd64 and arm64 both work. No cloud account, and no sign-up with the project.
Start it
git clone https://github.com/LeeMinNguyeen/msaving
cd msaving
docker compose up -d --build
docker compose logs msaving
The project publishes no ready-made images: Docker builds the server on your machine from the code you cloned,
which takes a few minutes the first time. main is always the latest release. The first start creates the
database, its passwords and the daily jobs by itself. Nothing to configure.
Keep this folder: updates, settings (.env) and the commands in these docs all run from it.
Create the admin
The log shows a setup code, like CJJV-SJ9H-EDWZ:
================================================================
This server has no admin yet. Open it in a browser and enter
this setup code to create the admin account:
CJJV-SJ9H-EDWZ
================================================================
Open http://localhost:8080 on the same machine, enter the code, name your server, and create your account. It becomes the server’s admin. The code proves you’re the person who installed the server, so nobody who finds it first can take it over. A new code is printed on every start until the admin exists.
Next
- Invite people.
- The server listens only on the machine itself until you choose otherwise: use it from other devices.
- Copy backups somewhere else regularly.
- Every option: Settings.
